The Church is Essential

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

Back when COVID shut everything down…(and depending on when you’re reading this – that could be right now…), I was scrolling through Facebook and saw a post from a news source that said the President was urging churches to reopen as they were “essential”.

Now, let me start by saying that I didn’t and do not read news articles shared on Facebook…for many reasons. However, this headline caught my attention because it got me thinking about how “essential” the church really is.

The way church is viewed in society is, in my opinion, far from what those chosen in Acts to start the first churches had in mind. Dare I say, the church has lost its voice and its strength to stand up for what is right and what is wrong.

The church is essential.

But why was that headline used to be divisive? The boldness of the headline is in itself meant to birth conflict and controversy.

I believe the church body is truly the collective body of believers and we are essential. It is not that the building is unimportant, but the strength, spirit, and love for one another comes from the body of Christ-followers. It is essential that we as a church body become stronger, so that those seeking Christ in times of struggle and uncertainty have a collective church body to lean on.

The church is essential.

I read a quote from a pastor that said, “the church is God’s design to spread truth and love.” I took this as a call to action. We are not here to seek comfort, we are supposed to be citizens of Heaven, sent here with a purpose.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare that praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” 1 Peter 2:9-10

“I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.” Jeremiah 24:7
